As part of its community outreach activities, HSC is organizing a sailing day for children in the summer camp program at the Neighborhood House Community Center. NHCC was founded in 1916 after Henry Barnbrock Jr.'s undergraduate thesis documented the growing social problems in the neighborhoods near the UW campus, and recommended its formation. Today, it offers programs and services, including a food pantry, community meals, adult wellness and enrichment classes, social programs for adults with disabilities, and youth activities for children from diverse and traditionally-underrepresented communities around Madison.
This event will be part of the summer camp session for the middle school group, ages 10-13, to give them the experience of sailing, and provide access to the spectacular, local natural resource of Lake Mendota in a new way. This summer camp group will consist of 27 children, and 3 adult leaders. The kids will gather at the Neighborhood House building on S. Mills Street, as usual, and walk to the lakefront around 10 o'clock. The tentative plan is to split up into roughly two groups to sail Badger Sloops, and keelboats. After lunch around noon, the groups will swap, so that everybody has a chance to experience both types of sailing.
We need club member volunteers for the following: Finding and fitting PFDs; safety briefing and orientation; boat rigging; Badger Sloop and keelboat skippers; boat de-rigging and put-away. Please email to let us know what times and activities you would like to cover.
