Event Information

Description

Prerequisite: WINDSURFING SHORTBOARD LIGHT

Earned from class: Respect.

Waterstarting is one of windsurfing\'s most challenging but most rewarding abilities to learn. Letting the wind and the sail pull the windsurfer up from the water revolutionized windsurfing and allowed us to progress to much smaller boards and to sail in very windy and wavy conditions. The ability to waterstart eliminates the need to uphaul in heavy conditions, thus saving immense amounts of forearm strength. Because of Mendota\'s unpredictable weather, this class is held primarily on-land. Students will learn the theory behind waterstarting, how to fly the sail, how to steer the board from in the water, and eventually how to let the sail pull them up into sailing position. If heavy enough wind conditions allow it, students will go out with instructor to practice on the water. Students will sail on Hi-Fly Mambos or BIC Melodies.
