Event Information

Description

Spring Chicken is back! Throughout this weekend, there will be a host of activities to kick off the summer season and test how rusty you are after being off the water for 7+ months. This will also serve as the coming out party for our newest fleet, the Topaz Rangers! Food will be provided for our Chickens each day of the event, with additional snacks available throughout Saturday. Below is a rough schedule of events:

Thursday June 1st

  • 6pm: FOOD!
  • 7-9pm: Swing dancing on the windsurfing deck with Madison Swing Club

Friday June 2nd

  • 5pm: Come as early as 5pm to test sail the Rangers! We'll be allowing all Chickens to take the boats for a spin before they're opened up to the general membership. Requirements: Zest or Tech rating
  • 6pm: FOOD!

Saturday June 3rd

  • 11am: Arrive and rig (be out on the water and ready to go by noon)
  • 12pm: Small fleets race (hopefully 2-3 races depending on wind conditions)
  • 2:30pm: Obstacle course
  • 3:30pm: Tech olympics (if time allows)
  • 4:30pm: FOOD!
  • Note: We will have snacks on the committee boat in case you get hungry while we're out on the water. Make sure to bring enough to drink and anything else you need to last a few hours out there!

Sunday June 4th

  • 12pm: Brunch (FOOD!)
  • 12:45pm: Awards
  • Afterwards: Go day sailing:)

Please Note - Requirements: Zest or Tech Rating

Since Spring Chicken has been completely reimagined for this year, we're keeping registration numbers low and requiring all participants have either a Zest or a Tech rating. Hopefully we'll be able to open it up more for next year!

Descriptions of events:

Swing Dancing with Madison Swing Club:

Madison Swing has been kind enough to come back again and teach us a few more moves, this time outside! This is a great chance to polish up on old moves and learn new ones with your fellow sailors.

Small Fleets Race:

Eligible boats are 420s, Lasers, Bytes, Zests, and Techs. The number of laps around the mooring field will be announced prior to the race start.

Obstacle Course:

We'll be setting up a race course to test different skills. This course may include challenges such as slalom, 360s, 720s, capsizing (depending on water temps), etc.

Tech Olympics:

This will be a timed skills test. On a tech that is placed in between two piers and individuals will need to complete a series of skills as quickly and accurately as they can. Skills may include rigging on the water, dry rolling, walking the stays, tacking, jibing, reefing the sail, tying a series of knots, telling a pirate joke, hiking out, or other pertinent sailing skills. Full list of official skills that need to be done for your time to be counted will be shared the day of the event.
